KAHUNA wins PHRF-1 Class at Screwpile and "Boat of the Regatta" Honors PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Solomons Island, MD - Wednesday, July 24, 2002

What a Regatta!--The 2002 Screwpile Regatta was sailed in the waters off Solomons July 21-23. The tenth anniversary edition of the annual event drew a record fleet of 155 boats. Sailors descended upon Solomons from all corners of Chesapeake Country--contingents were on hand from Baltimore, Annapolis, Oxford, Hampton, Deltaville, Dahlgren, Solomons, and everywhere in between. The Screwpile truly is the centerpiece of the Chesapeake racing season and it is the only big boat event of the year which features teams from all over the Bay racing head-to-head.

The large fleet was rewarded with three excellent sailing days of hot southerly breezes. The 2002 session will be remembered as the most consistently breezy Screwpile thus far. Opening Day, Sunday, July 21, was the lightest of the trio and featured two races in a southerly which began at 10 knots, dropped to six, and built to the mid-teens by the end of the second contest. Monday and Tuesday also saw two races per day and 11-16 knot southerlies, moving into the 18-20 knot range in Race #6, defined the sailing.

The event included PHRF (spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker) classes as well as one-design starts for Tripp 26, J/105, J/30, J/29, and Catalina 27 classes. A six boat MORC class was also on-hand and contested the East Coast Championship as part of the regatta.

The Calvert County Trophy, recognizing the Screwpile’s overall Boat of the Regatta, was presented to Sanford Richardson and the crew of his Farr 395 Kahuna. Richardson has led a number of successful racing programs from his Hampton base but this was his first Screwpile with his new dark red 395. The Kahuna sailing team included Richardson, Kenny Saylor, Fred Sage, Adam Sammis, Will Van Cleef, Bryce Barritt, Joe Ozelis, Paul Garn, Rick Born, Dave Scott, Chris Conners, Martin Holland, and Dan Smoker.
